ARRIVING IN BUDAPEST

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

It is pretty ridiculous in our digital age, but often you get better rates exchanging banknotes within Hungary at a bureau de change rather than exchanging currency through your bank. However, since each bureau de change creates their own rates, there may be significant differences! Take a look here to have an idea of what could be a fair rate. By searching the addresses you can also locate an option near to you.

TAXIS

Taxis have a fixed tariff, so you just need to be sure that the yellow car you get in is a taxi. If it has a starting tariff of HUF 1000 and a km tariff of HUF 400 it probably is.

GETTING AROUND

Budapest's public transport system is well organised and mostly reliable. Beyond the usual mobile device applications, you can also use this page to plan your trip. Zooming in, you can even see the live location of the vehicles you are waiting for.

To travel on public transport you need to have a valid pass, or a ticket bought in advance and validated by inserting into the time stamp machine on the vehicle or at the entrance to the metro stop. See types and prices here.

KNOW THE WEATHER!

For a quick overview, there are the international weather services available. You can also find local forecasts in English at the website of the Hungarian Meteorological Service. Forecast maps may be useful for knowing the changes in temperature, precipitation or wind during the day. Aside from extreme weather conditions the forecasts are usually reliable.
